thanks
btw i also have a canon speedlite 220ex........so i think that is wat i have to use...(otherwise the lighting is screwed up)
thanks for any help!
I can get extremely close to most of the great blue herons around here, but i carry a 400mm lens just in case.

Hey E.B., your kit lens shots of the night heron are excellent, but i would ditch the kit lens for this type of photography and maybe get the 70-200 f4L to put in the boat or even maybe the 100 f2 if you can get that close. I would personally get a prime for the sharpest pics possible, but i'm a sharpness/detail freak.
Even the 75-300 usm would be better than the kit lens i would imagine and it's not very expensive.

My wallet can't get near a lens with a L in it's name.

I do have a Sigma 70-300 but I haven't taken it in the kayak yet, I'm not too sure about keeping it stable at 300mm. As soon as it warms up a little I'm going to give it a try.

P.S.
Needless to say, nice shot.
