Default Trumpeter Swans

Got out again this weeked to Crex Meadows in Grantsburg, WI.
Here's a few shots of some Trumpeter's. First, an adult with a couple of cygnets. Massing in the grasses are Red-wing Blackbirds getting ready to migrate.

They'll keep the gray through the winter and next season get their classic white plumage, like these two.

Those good looks and classic graceful appearance don't come easy. Here's a pair stained from the tannin in the water, striking a not so elegant pose as they do some preening.

In a couple more months, they'll be leaving Crex Meadows when the water freezes over. As all the Trumpeters here were re-introduced, after being wipped out for their feathers in the early 1900s, they only migrate about 60 miles, where there's open water all winter long. That puts them much closer to where we live, and I can get pictures year 'round.

Taken with Pentax Kx and Sigma 150 to 500 mm lens.
