Default Sandhill Cranes

Crex Meadows near Grantsburg, WI, is a major gathering place for migrating Sandhill Cranes. During the spring and summer there's about 700 resident cranes nesting in the refuge. In the fall that number swells to 7 - 8000 cranes. They gather there to pack in the protein for the flight to Florida. We like to get up there before sunrise, toward the end of October. Just as the sun comes over the horizon, they start taking off, heading for the fields that surround the refuge.

Here's a small group that's already arrived. They tend to stay in family groups, so most of these may be related.

Here they've decided it's time for "breakfast" and start to take flight.

Taken with Pentax Kx and Sigma 150 - 500 mm lens
