Default Virginia Rail- Out in the open

Virginia Rails are often heard but seldom seen in the open. I was at the Colusa National Wildlife refuge taking pictures of the ducks and geese with the refuge manager when I spotted this rail sunning next to the water. I had seen two other fleeting glimpses of this rail as it flew into the reeds and quickly disappeared. I was lucky enough to get about a dozen shots before it flew across to another hiding spot and was gone. The refuge manager said he had never gotten a picture of a Virginia Rail in all the years he had been managing that refuge so I felt very fortunate indeed.

This is when I first noticed the rail. and he noticed me I think. All together he was out and visible for about 90 seconds.

Just when I thought he was going to disappear he took flight and flew across the pond to another patch of cattails and was gone.

This is my favorite shot. Not the best IQ but pretty good.
AND....He was gone for the day.

Wow what a beautiful bird, never heard of it! Congrats for the capture.

The one of him sneaking behind the sleeping birds cracked me up!
