Default Egret vs Mouse

I have been really lucky with my timing lately. I was shooting a Red-shouldered hawk when I noticed a Great Egret about 50 yards away intently focused on something in the reeds. I panned just in time to capture a sequence of the Egret catching a mouse.

I title this shot... "OH, Crap!"

Aptly titled and expertly captured. Bad day for the mouse, though!

I thought Egrets and Great Blue Heron only eat fish. I was so wrong. First I photograph a GBH ate a mouse in Grain Regional Park few months ago. Now you shot a picture of an Egret eating a mouse. Good catch!

Egrets, like most in the Heron family, have a pretty broad diet including fish, small rodents, dragonflies, small reptiles etc.
I did see an Egret struggle to swallow a fairly large gopher it had caught one time. It finally managed but I don't know how it did it without choking.

Cheers, Steve
