Default a couple more owls from yesterday

at the risk of boring everyone to tears, i thought i'd put up just a couple more owl photos from yesterday's excursion...

a short-eared owl perching on a post, showing off for the camera... 7D, 400mm, 1/500 @ f/5.6

sitting on a pile of dead brush, same settings...

a long-eared owl on a dead branch, giving me a pretty intense look... 400mm, 1/400 @ f/5.6

Beautiful pictures! I can't get enough of these owls pictures. I don't see them enough down here in my area and often too far away for me to do anything.

thanks, WCKSer! these are the first decent owl photos i've been able to get... mostly, the barred owls that are relatively common here tend to stay in deep woods, and i seldom even see one. but these short- and long-eared owls are wintering here, and have taken up residence in an area where they come out in the open - much to the delight of local photographers! for that shot of the long-eared, i was about 35 feet away; there were probably 15 or more people around me, many with tripods and 500mm lenses. it's amazing, frankly, that the owl wasn't completely scared out of its wits by all the attention!
