Default winter blackbird

today looked like it might be half decent... some sun late morning, so i headed down to my "bird park" hoping for some good light. alas, this is Washington in winter, so it was not to be... cloud cover closed up, everything turned gray and dim... but i hung around anyway, just because, well, it's what i do... the redwing blackbirds are just starting to make their presence known, and this little fella obliged by landing on a nearby cattail and posing for me... 7D, 150-600 @ 500mm, 1/500 @ f/6.3...

These guys are noisy during mating season as they are hovering from tree to tree. This is a good shot! I can never get a good shot of one until after the mating season is over.

thanks, WCKSer! i'm fortunate the park i go to to shoot these guys has some very good locations, and it's pretty easy to get shots all the way through the courtship/mating season, as well as afterward... i'm often able to get them within 15-20 feet.
