Default horned grebe in breeding plumage

got word that a couple of horned grebes in breeding plumage were hanging out at a marina not far from here, and since they're usually only in the area for a few days, i scooted down to have a look... 7D, Tammy 150-600 @ 600mm, various shutter speeds @ f/11...

this little fellow caught himself a sculpin (we used to call these 'bullheads' when i was a kid...) and had some fresh sushi...

Nice captures! The fish has a big head and no wonder you called it a Bull-head. I wonder it the Grebe has any problem swallowing it.

I do have one from yesterday but not in full breeding plumage. Not nearly as good as yours.

thanks, NHL! yeah, they're ugly little suckers, though! bottom feeders, total garbage fish except as food for aquatic birds like grebes!

thanks, WCKSer! he did have a bit of difficulty positioning it properly, and lost it a couple of times so he had to dive to retrieve it, but eventually he got it pointed the right direction, and down it went!
