Any idea what kind of bird this is? I photographed it today. It didn't fly much but rushed about alot, picking at the ground. It was a very nervous bird. Any ideas about what it is?

Let's see if we can't identify this bird. Here are the features that stand out:

1. White eye ring
2. Long tail, constantly bobbing up and down
3. Short degenerate beak
4. Wings degenerate
5. Sharp talons
6. White underside and throat
7. Reddish upper parts
8. Black line along sides
9. Double-crested

I think that I know this bird - it's commonly referred to as a Red Squirrel, latin name of Tamiasciurus hudsonicus!

Good capture Norm! :-)

People seemed to forget its call. It can make a wide variety of calls and noises, often sounding kinda like other birds but not exactly.... it can be very misleading to those who are good at id'ing by sound (which I'm not.)

This little bird was flying about that afternoon so I decided to conduct some flight experiments on it with respect to shutter speeds and such. Here are my results:

slow shutter speed, first attempt, very poor contrast

Increased contrast, a tiny bit faster shutter, still lacking, back to the drawing board

Aaack, I can see it's eyes. Definitely this increase in shutter helps. Good grief, this doesn't even look like a bird anymore...

Hmm, too slow on the shutter button, but I'm beginning to see some fur spurs

Okay, okay, I need some flash. Man, I'm such a hypocrite

Better...hey, this thing isn't a bird! And birds don't eat acorns

This is a squirrel!! Still not enough light and not enough shutter but enough for me to now tell that this is definitely "not" a bird!

Yes, Vito, I was forced to use flash on the last few in order to capture the speed. I tried a few times and it didn't appear to bother the squirrel (yep, I'm making excuses), so that's how I inevitably solved my little photo problem to a degree...freeze frame. I'm looking forward to getting the Mark II as it will do a whole lot better with this sort of thing, which is really one of my priorities. I'm an action nut.

well....i could tell flash was used...at least on the last one...but mainly because of the red eye...

lol..i just had an idea....i wonder wat it would be like, to put a human eye....on a squirrel....(with photoshop of course...lol)
