Went to Palo Alto baylands. There are bunch of White Pelicans which hang out over there. I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time. I saw these birds come and land in water right where I was standing.

Here is one coming right at me.

This was how close the above guy was to me. The bottom shot is crop as I clipped his wing.

Got to play with the panning technique. I guess using IS mode 1 or mode 2 or no IS didn't matter as far as I see.

Seems he is dumping fuel before landing

Another panning shot

Bad landing so had to take off

Perfect landing here

More shots in my gallery at http://bobbyz.smugmug.com/gallery/166964/1

I am very happy with my 100-400L IS lens.

Really good series, bobbyz! I like #4 because of the way the sun his lighting the bird and showing off the pelican's bill (now... if it weren't for the bird taking a dump right at that moment...). The last one catches my attention because it shows how the pelican is putting on the brakes during the water landing.

Very nice!

Very nice photos bobby. You've done a great job of catching flight here. If you don't mind, please tell me what shutter, aperture, and ISO you had set, as well as mm's. Thanks, great job. That lens seems to be working nicely with your 10D.

PS - #3 is especially good to me because your background bokeh brings out the sense of motion. As well, wing position is excellent.

Thanks Normcar.

I use ISO200 all the time as I don't see any noise at this ISO. Camera was in aperture priority mode. Using anything from F8.0 to F9.5. Shutter speeds were anywhere from 1/250 to 1/500. I also used AI sero mode where it suppose to focus as the subject moves. Using burst mode along with AI servo mode helped. My IS settings were all over the place, some with IS off, some with IS in mode 1 when I should be using mode 2, but it seems IS didn't matter that much.

Forgot to add, all at 400mm. I have copped the shots been posted. All shots taken in RAW, processed using C1. Only minor sharpening in C1. I don't know much PS so I used it only to crop.
