Although I like birds, I'm not a bird photographer. Part of the reason for this is that I don't have the right equipment. I recently went to San Diego with a borrowed Digital Rebel and 75-300mm IS lens. That's still not a good birding setup (although it's better than my own gear), but I saw something that I couldn't resist photographing and posting here. That lens is soft at 300mm (especially wide open), but I was able to sharpen up the image a little.



I have never seen a great blue heron in a tree! In fact, if someone told me that they never did, I wouldn't have doubted it. But, there it is!

I dont know much about these birds, we do get them here but I have to say that Ive never seen one in a tree either:-)How far from the bird were you?

I was pretty far away. It was taken at 300mm (480mm field-of-view!), and what you see was resized 50% and cropped. So, the bird is only twice that big in the original full-size photo.
