Surprised I was able to get close to this quail.

There were guys hunting in this field all week. fz1 c-210 as usual.

What really nice photos, zoomn! Quail are really tough to get close to - they are so wary. You must have been in real stealth mode.

I think I'll go with #1 as the best since there seems to be the sharpest image in that one, although I really like the bird's pose in #2. Actually, it really is tough to choose between the two of those...

Thanks geoffs,

Agree the first one is the sharpest and the second has the better pose.

These were all handheld shots at max zoom so was pretty happy with the sharpness. Actually 12x optical and a bit into digital so probably around 18x or so.

I threw the third one in because of the good detail on the head. Don't know why the bottom feathers appear less sharp. Maybe he was wiggling his butt when I took it ...............

geoffs do you know, is it weird for quail to have the double fan on their head, seems like most of them I see only have 1?

I think the bottom feathers + post aren't as sharp due to the DOF at that zoom factor.

As far as the double plume feathers on the guy's head... most quail I've seen in person or in images only exhibit one feather up there. A few pictures do show the double plume, as in the bottom picture on this page:
