This starling was very interested in what I was doing. Got really close.

Nice photo! The bird seems to be a Brewer's Blackbird.

I think you're right, I just looked it up in my bird book (smacks forehead)and the eye looks right. Where I grew up we called them starlings. Just goes to show the things kids get told aren't alwayscorrect.

Starlings would be speckled and smaller than that bird.

Most birds of this kind are fairly intelligent and inquisitive. I'm not surprised it was interested in what you were doing... it does look a bit odd when it happens, though.
