Fantastic. I am glad you did not crop
the space to the right of the bird, it adds a lot.
How did you get that close using a
300mm?

This was taken from 20 feet or so... the 300/4 AFS will focus down to 4.75 feet but the depth of field at f/4 would have been much shallower at that distance. I couldn't get any closer because there was a little extension of the pond in between.

I maintained the space when cropping to give him a place to pounce into
