Today I finally got a satisfactory shot at the bird that was initially responsible for getting me on this bird photo quest. My first chance came about 9 months ago and I've been looking for him ever since. Today he flew up to a tree next to me, posed, then vanished into the blue.

first shot is great! nice and sharp!

not as good as some i've seen from you, but still very nice

the perches in these shots blurred weird...

nicely done norm! a fly, perch, disappear is hard to catch

Thanks for having a look, Vito, I appreciate the comments. I'm real happy just to get something unblurred on that Pileated since I've been waiting for nine months for it to come...ack, this sounds like pediatrics. :?

I have a similar problem with this bird. I hear them and know they are around, and even know people who see them regularly. But I never do. I've seen one in about... 7 years or so.

So while I agree with Vito, it isn't your best work, its still a good shot of an illusive bird.

You finally got pictures of them! Wonderful, Norm!

Ok, so they're not your best work but they'd be considered very, very good for most anyone else. Just goes to show you the level of excellence we've all come to expect of you, Norm... :G

Congrats Norm on getting this bird. It is fun to have a goal like this and then see it achieved, gives you a good feeling of accomplishment.

These are nice shots. Thanks for sharing your success with us.

As many of you know this is one of those crazy birds that doesn't sit still they circle the tree and climb to the top. Very difficult to get pictures of.

Thanks Zoomn, since I've only seen these things once or twice this year I treat it as a sort of birthday present when I do, and I'm used to not getting the best shot at it because when I see one I think my blood pressure probably doubles and my mind clouds over slightly.

Thanks for dropping by for a look.
