Look like one. I saw him on top of a tree. Approx 50 feet away. I put my tamron 1.4x on 100-400L and took these shots. All hand held at ISO400. It was a cloudy day today.

Yep! Pretty sure that's a juvi Red Tail.
I am drooling buckets with envy!
Someday I am going to have a DSLR and a nice IS Long Lens and go nuts. What a superb series of shots.

Those are gold!

great series bobbyz!!! I've been thinking of getting a 1.4x for my 100-400L.
Looks like it does a pretty good job. Which model is it? Does autofocus function with it?

Thats a really great series you've got there bobbyz. And hand held at that. You must have used the side of a tree or a fence post or something to help get them that sharp. I still have my first hawk to get. Haven't caught one yet. About the only time I ever see one is on a telephone line going to and from work. Lots of times I pull over but he takes flight before I can even get camera in hand.

I am using cheap tamron 1.4x, cost was about $60. The AF does work. These shots were taken at F8 and F9.5 on camera, so technically they were at f11 and next lower 1/2 stop. I might add, using 1.4x tc on 100-400 is not that good option. You need good light, otherwise shutter speeds are too low.I think I got lucky with these shots. I tried to brace against my car but the last 3 shots were taken just standing in the open. The IS was on for these shots.

Thanks smac.

Actually 400mm is not not long. Lucky this hawk gave me some time to put my 1.4x tc. Wish I had 500mm F4 then one can even use 2x tc. But it is too much money and I am not sure if I be able to carry it.

Houston, I see hawks all the time but they also fly before I can take a shot. Other times, there is no place to stop. I am taking notes of where these guys perch and there is very good chance that they will perch on same places. So I just drive around scanning those spots.

Thanks for the reply bobby. I think at this point it might be wiser to lose
a stop or two than to take out a second mortgage on the lens I would really
like. :-)

I have a few red tails in my area. I love to watch them fly. It is amazing how long they can soar without a flap of the wings. Wish I understood photography as well as they know air currents.
