Seems like Nuttall's woodpecker to me. Used 1.4x TC. Hand held. Raw to jpeg. USM, levels, NI.

nice shots, stunning looking bird. I dont think we get these woodpecker type birds over here.

nice woodpecker shots. I like #1, even though you don't see the whole
bird, it looks like the guy is contemplating it's next move or is just deep
in thought about something. As far as ID, your probably right.

what kind of camera set up did you use to take these shots?, I get the impression he was a little way off.

I am using canon's 10D along with the 100-400L IS lens. I put 1.4x TC from tamron for these shots. All were taken hand held with IS on.
