Oh yeah, definately a mocker. I've been trying to chase one down at one
of my favorite birding spots for a couple weeks now. The little bugger has
been staying deep in the bushes.

Look in any bird book (I use Sibley's). The head shape and esp the transition from forhead to beak is not right for a Mockingbird.

dcl2q - what you'll see in the field guides are "typical" looks and poses of birds. It's tough to capture in one static image the range of postures and appearances that a bird can assume in real life. While I agree that the transition from forehead to beak isn't what is shown in the guides, consider that this bird was photographed in winter, has the appearance of having its feathers fluffed out for heat retention, and therefore could be confusing.

However, if mommy2owen doesn't mind, you could post this image to birdforum.net with an id request. The people on that site are extremely good at id. I'm willing to accept any id they come up with.

No, I wouldn't mind at all. I'm curious to find out the answer myself.

I believe it to be a Mockingbird. It was probably taken on a cold day. Looks like it's feathers are fluffed to help keep it warm. We have many Mockingbirds in eastern North Carolina. I've seen them look both ways. My 2 cents worth. Nice photos too.

I also have this picture in case it could help anyone. I didn't post it earlier because it's farther away and I'm not 100% sure it's the same bird.

Why, of course. With that picture its obvious! Its a mocking bird! What else could it be?

I really didn't remember the eye stripe. But a quick check of sibley's guide shows that there is one. Maybe I was thinking of a catbird? Who knows...

I was taking a final exam in college and the professor said "now remember, your first instinct are usually right. So if an answer pops into your head is probably right." 3 hours later, at another exam a different professor said "Your first guess is probably wrong. Don't go with the first answer that pops into your head."

I had to laugh.

Eric, the first professor was undoubtedly correct! In any case, that "first guess is the best guess" policy always worked well for me in college...
