I was out with a group doing a winter rapter trip. We get a good influx of raptors during the winter... including bald eagles. Here is a series of shots when the bird flew out of a tree away from me, then banked and flew right by me. I believe about 25 or so feet away.

I nearly froze my fingers 'cause I had to take my gloves off to switch to focus tracking mode. The temperature was around 10 below 0... oh, and the snow you see in the picture finally stopped the next day after dumping about 25" on us. Fun, Fun.

Oh, and those last two are almost full frame. Yes, it was that close.

All were taken with the 20D, 600mm f4... maybe the 1.4TC (I don't recall) on a tripod. Fairly simple photoshop changes. Contrast, sharpening, touch of levels... that kinda stuff.

Wow Eric,

Those are terrific. I will take luck anytime. Really sweet shots. You really nailed it from all angles in one pass. That's Uber-Luck my friend. No doubt about it.

All of these shots are sweet, Eric. But I think that the thing that I really like the most is the detail that allows the viewer to home in on small things like the hook of the eagle's upper beak or the feet in tucked position, especially in that last photo.

As smac said, uber-luck!

The only thing I'd kill for was if, in that second to last shot, the eagle turned its head towards me.

But I'm being picky. I like these shots a lot. I've shot eagles in the wild many times, but never this close.

Eric....let me catch my breath and wait for the green (from envy) drain from my face...wow! Those are really eye boggling shots. Far as I can tell, I would call it a draw. Two show offs. The eagle for his fantastic flight, and you, for these fantastic pics. Best regards,

KennethD (eagles are my favorite...)

The last shot makes you feel like you're flying with the eagle. All awsome!
