Great shot and it's very interesting to see a post with that particular lens. Looks like it can do a pretty fine job: nice saturation and thanks to your skill, camera and lens combo you got a real sharp flight shot.

PS - it looks like that gull is banded or am I seeing things? I was checking out the excellent saturation in the feet and saw what appears to be a band. I guess you may have caught some research here

Normcar,

Thanks, the compliment means a lot coming from you.

Actually I'd be surprised if there was a "wild" bird in the UK that isn't banded. I'm sure he is or has been part of some research program.

I find it sad in some ways - compared to South Africa where there are still an awfully large number of truly wild birds. However the little wildlife that is to be found in the UK really is cherished, so I guess it balances out.

Re the lens - yes, I'm more of a landscape/urban person really and wouldn't honestly recommend the DO as a wildlife lens; but with a bit of care I think it can serve well for the occasional wildlife shot. Actually given it's size and weight it would be a very tempting hiking lens.

I put up a couple of other shots in Canon lenses forum on the thread about the lens.
