A pair of immature Turkey vultures in Putnum County New York

A close up of one of these birds.

I should pause and point out that these are good natured, intelligent birds and a search on the web will make you fall in love with these guys.

An angry Red Tailed hawk

Actually that's not true. For weeks I was going up to Putnum County (and yes, I have picture from Brooklyn too) to shoot images of two pairs of these Hawks fighting it out for territory. I just ASSUMED that I was witnessing a dramatic struggle for territory. Finally I said to myself, "wait a minute, this has been going on for WEEKS, and all they do is fly into the tree that the other Hawks was occupying. No one actually gets attacked."

So freeing myself of what I thought I was seeing, what was actually going on was a game of musical tree's. This was a friendly warm-up that these four Hawks were playing to stretch their muscles. That "angry look" can be translated as "ready or not here I come."
