And a Common Loon.


All of these birds are diving fish eating creatures. The Common Loon, if of course not a duck, it's not even related to ducks. Who knew?

But they all have the same look when they dive. If you watch closely they rear back and throw themselves into the air and then head first disapear. The whole thing happens so fast that you can easily miss how they actually lift themselves off the water.

All this from the sunny winter climate of Brooklyn where these three species winter. These shots were all taken last month.
