This weekend I decided to pay a visit to a little village called Spring Mills on
Penns Creek. I knew that the creek stayed pretty much ice free all winter
because it is heavilly spring fed. And since everything else was froze up,
I decided to cruise down there and see if there were any ducks or geese there.
There were quite a group of mallards there. Filled a 512 meg card there.
Here's a couple of posers. I'm doing another post on some action shots.

All shots 20D, 100-400L, ISO 400 , Av mode

first a couple of girl mallards
This one was a full frame vertical. Cropped horizontal because DOF dropped rapidly back to the ducks butt. Only thing done to this one was
resize for web.
380 mm, f/8, 1/250 sec (it was shaded)

This one was an 80% crop vertical, and crunched horizontal to size (surrounding snow was just too blown out) Note: spot metering mode works real well, so far
380 mm, f/8, 1/500 sec

Now, a couple of a boy mallard
This is full frame, resized for web.
400 mm, f/8, 1/800 sec

This is just a crop of the previous

Very nice Woodmeister. You're getting some very sharp detail with that new camera and the 100-400L.

Excellent use of that new tool, woodmeister. I'm sure that it's nice not to need to worry about some things that you used to worry about. Now you can concentrate and focus on getting good clearunobstructed backgrounds and earth-shaking ambient light ops.

Great job.

Thanks guys!! I think I made a good descision getting the new cam. I was seriously
considering a 1DmkII, but I decided that for the difference in price, I could get
some more good glass. Not sure what though. I could use something to fill the gap
between the 100-400L and my 17-40L, especially with spring coming up with
the macro world of insects and wildflowers.
