What I find most difficult with my current digi (Oly C-755) is the dynamic range involved; the underside of the bird is almost always significantly darker than the bright sky behind, so exposures are a nightmare.
Hi Norm, just checking to make sure that you know about backlit situations because no camera, not even the best DSLR in the world, will brighten up a bird if one is shooting at it in a backlit environment. You will get a silhouette no matter what camera you have.

If the above is not what you are doing then perhaps a new camera might be a potential good choice. I believe that the DSLR is a great move upwards but not particularly because it will illuminate birds better as that is more a matter of technique and where the light is with respect to the camera.

Cheers, and thanks again for having a look.

Yes, that I know. It's mostly in the hope of getting a bit more dynamic range that will (??) stretch a couple more zones out of the images. The little bit of bird shooting I've done has been pretty much limited to Black Kites flying over our house. I would like to think I try to catch them when their bodies are tilted away from me so I can catch some light on the underside, but as you know, it's mostly a matter of luck.

Here's a recent one:
