It was a beautiful day yesterday and cruised to a lot of different areas. Got
what I think are some pretty good shots of a variety of things, which I'll be
posting later. But this guy has me really confused. But then these LBJ's
(little brown jobs) always give me problems, and with spring coming it will
probably get even worse. Anyway, here are some shots of this guy. HELP!!

This is an easy one. I'm surprised you haven't named it. It's a "Sparrow with two vertical lines on its head, and a spotted white chest...."

There are only about thirty sparrows that even come close to the above description....

Nice shots - better wait till a Sparrow person comes along...

Ok, Woodmeister, here's a real guess:

A "Song Sparrow," which my books describes in the following way:

"Melospiza melodia...

All Melospiza subspecies have long rounded tail, pumped in fleight. All show broad grayish eyebrow and broad, dark malar stripe bordering whitish throat.

Highly variable. Upper parts are usually streaked, Underparts whitish, with streaking on sides and breast that often converges in a central spot. Legs and feet are pinkish."

In other words, not only are there gobs of separate species that all look similar, but withing the species, the variation might be extensive.

The dark stick pin spot in the center of the breast is a song sparrow trait
