It was a dark, dank, and cold weekend but slapped on the flash and went
out anyway, and for the first photo I was glad I did. This ruffed grouse was
putting on a display for his perspective girl friend. She walked off into the woods
but he kept showing off there and I was able to get really close before he
decided to walk off. Then later on in another spot, ran into a chickadee.
This guy also let me get really close. All shots are full frame but decided to
crop out the sides in the first chickadee shot as it wasn't all that interesting.

All shots 20D, 100-400L, 420EX flash

The hot-to-trot grouse
ISO 400, f/7.1, 1/250 sec, 400mm

chickadee1
ISO 100, f/7.1, 1/250 sec, 365mm

chickadee2, "OK, Your close enough!"
ISO 100, f/7.1, 1/250 sec, 365mm

Great captures, Woodmeister. I don't have a pic of a grouse yet. Nice job.

Very nice Woody and I like the first one of the Chickadee the best. I suppose the ISO 100 really paid off on it and the other ones. The detail is really good. If his eyes had showed up a little betterthat would have been great wouldn't it.

Great shots wm, and the sharpness and color in the grouse is excellent to say the least. I'm always keeping my eye out for something like that but yet to no avail.

I liked the way he is looking at you & your camera/lens in #2.

Keep watching mullen. It's the time of year they will be roaming since it's mating season.

Thanks Norm! Really appreciate it. They're coming out of the woods here quite a bit.
I was just lucky to catch him wooing a mate, who by the way just walked off into the woods.
