there's a field i pass by regularly near a river. the river overflows in the spring and creates a puddle sometimes the size of a small pond. recently while driving by i would notice this heron standing at the edge of the puddle but never had my camera with me. yesterday i decided to have my new 20D and 100-400mm zoom with me and stopped to see if the heron was there, sure enough he was standing where he usually stood proud and tall. i had to shoot through bushes to get him but, i got him!!! the 20D and zoom worked very nicely. hope you like the shot!!!

Well, dennis, this has got to be one of the most intriguing herons that I have ever seen. I would swear that it was a scare-heron (relative of the renowned crow) if I didn't know better :-)

Great shot, and congratulations on getting that shot you were working for.

Norm, i have no idea why it was where it was!!!! Like I mentioned, it's in a field that floods in the springtime. It's actually in the corner of the field. Unless the people realize herons frequent the river area and swamp and just want to be friendly or something, i don't know. This faked me out the first couple of times I saw it. Going 40mph by it and looking through the bushes, it looked real. What would a scare heron scare away?? Other herons? Anyway, I thought it was quite comical. Now, I have seen fake coyotes planted around golf courses and ball fields to keep the geese from wrecking those places.

It's actually a cool photo, I like the effect that you got with the background. One needs to look 3 times to be sure that it's not a real bird. Thanks for sharing it with us all, probably fooling a few too :G:lol:
