For the last two days this bird has greeted me on the ponds, circling me as soon as I get there, making it's low, sweet, quonk, quonk, quonk, as it flies by. I am impressed by it's seeming sociability and gentle nature. Here are 7 flight shots from hundreds that I now have of the bird. It tired me out but gave me loads of practice in flight shots:

400/5.6 both with and without 1.4x extender. Resolving power is equal with either so it doesn't make much visual difference IMO. I don't see much difference between either using or not using the extender and the only significant change is in speed of auto focus:

Wow these are very nice Normcar.

I like the last one best. The composition and combination of colors in the sky really make that nice.

For the closeups I like the first one best because of the wing position.

You lucky dog finding a pond like that with lots of opportunity. It has been so hot here lately there are very few birds showing much activity.

Thanks zoomn, it's a good place and I'm not finished with it yet as every time I go there I seem to find something new. Unfortunately, tonight it rained all evening so I had to sit still, which was no fun at all. As always, I appreciate your specific comments as it helps me to evaluate and redirect attentions in future shots and posts. Your comments actually are extremely close to what I would have said myself on these photos respecting what I like and/or don't, for instance the last one with the added blue.

Very nice shots Norm. I also like #1 and #4 the best as I tend to favor the downward stroke of birds wings in flight.

My Willets do the same thing, but they're out to get me. They actually have dive bombed the dog. Willet, as I have found, tastes lousy so there's nothing I can do about it.

Really nice shots!
