This Downy Woodpecker was busy eating from a suet feeder in our backyard when it suddenly scooted around to one side and froze. I know something had scared it, but it took a while for me to spot it. A hawk had landed in the tree about 20 feet up. I finally moved a bit and the hawk took off. The Downy then started feeding again like nothing had happened. Woody

feeding calmly.

Spots hawk.

I don't think the hawk saw the Downy. Type of hawk anyone?

Freezes for more than 10 minutes.

Continues to feed.

Finally got shot of her away from feeder. Woody

Cool series, Woody. I've seen them do this, too.

Thanks. It was tense for a while. I scared the hawk off. I don't mind it taking a sparrow or Cowbird, but leave the little Downy's alone. Woody
