Last week was a week for red-tailed hawks. In 3 days I saw 8 to 10. Unfortunately for me they were all a bit far off for anything good. Today a heron flew in and I was able to get 5 shots off and only 1 was decent and a mediocre flight shot. And a goose. All with 20D & 100-400mm & various techs.

1. Canada goose. Must have been 500 of them and as I crossed the street this one was the straggler.

2. Great Blue Heron flew in and landed on ice by the only liquid in the swamp.

3. Great Blue flying away. As I was sneaking up on it trying to get a clear view at on the ice a car making lots of noise spooked him and he saw me and flew. This was the only "clean" shot of him flying. I think it's a young by the looks of the previous shot.

4. Red-tailed Hawk taken a couple days ago on my way to "the swamp". It was sitting in a tree in a heavily trafficed spot. I parked and got a couple of shots off. This was the best of them.

Wonderful variety and quality Dennis. I need to take a day trip to Lake Mattamuskeet here in NC. All these beautiful bird photos are going to force me into making time to atleast give it a shot...so to speak. Woody

djb - I LOVE your second Blue Heron photo! I would be so-o-o excited to get that shot - WOW! As for the red-tailed, they definitely do NOT like being photographed! I think you did a great job getting him perched before he took off. It's hard to get those guys!
