In the UK we have 2 types of rats, The Brown Rat (also known as water rat) and the sewer rat. The water rat also comes from the other well known water rodent, the water Vole. The vole is smaller in size and has a shorter tail but regularly gets mixed up with the rat family when seen in lakes/ditches etc. Hopes this helps. www.k9imageworld.com www.bevbarkerphotos.com
Well, while no expert on European rats, it appears that your "Brown Rat" is in fact the same rat that I so happily see all over New York - meaning it's the Norway Rat.

I find this especially interesting, because you do have another species, dwindling in number called the "Black Rat." As a history buff, it was this "Black rat" which was responsible for the Bubonic plague of the 14th century. But my history books call this the "brown rat."

Say what? So I'm more confused then ever.

In addition the "water rat," your Water Vole, is as you say only a distant relative, and is the "rat" in the book Wind in the Willows. We have no match here. All out voles are quite small.

Your rats are quite "cute." Especially compared to ours, but they vary wildly and I've seen some cute rats in Brooklyn... :?:

You've inspired me to go out and take picture of them ()

But I can do this best by going to China town at 5 AM...

Thanks Dave for your information on the rat, its right in everything you have said, they say there is 10 rats to every person, (thats quite scary) but they are interesting little creatures and make good photographic subjects, thats why i was drawn back there today, and as long as i am quiet and dont make sudden noises they get on with their lives.Heres some i took today.

Incredible detail in all of the photos. Wonderful saturation. I've never seen rats looking so cute before. Woody
