Strickland36 - I used to use an FZ10 [ effective 432mm], here are some shots I took with the camera. You can get good shots with your camara, and I think most, if not all bird photographers will ask for 'more lens'

DSLR is hugely expensive, a "reasonable" tele lens will set you back 4 - 5 times more than your whole camara cost, and thats without wide angle !!!!! Persist with and enjoyyour machine until you can afford the DSLR route, and try and get as close to the birds as possible. Some guys use hides, portable or fixed.

The first shot is a Lilac-Breasted Roller, same as the one in the "Raw recovery"post

Excellent examples, Jake. I shot with the FZ 10 and then 20 before I got my Rebel. One possibility with a fixed lens camrea like this is to get a good quality tele-converter like the Olympus t-con 1.7X or Raynox 1.54X to give you a little more reach. I used the Raynox 1.54X with my FZ 20 and got pretty good results. Here are a few examples

thank you both for the replies. Please don't get me wrong. I am not ready to plunk down the cash for a DSLR. I am way to POOR for that and really not sure I am thatdedicated to it or really need it. I have seen some really great pictures with the model camera I have, and expect to learn on it for a while.

I have looked at two teleconverters. the tcon-17, and raynox dcr 2020. I have read really good things about both. the picture are really great . I am hoping to acquire one here really soon. till then I will have to just find a way to get closer. thanks again

I tried the Raynox DCR 2020 and got better results with the Raynox 1.54 Pro. I believe it has higher resolution.
