went to a local park today, where there's a heron's nest in a tree. i knew the chicks should be up and about, and wanted to get some shots. the light was terrible, but i managed these... nowhere near what i'd like, but better than none at all!!

Oh, I love them. The Herons in Brooklyn breed on islands, and I never get a chance to see the young...

A little off topic, but do you know how much they want to rent those condomeniums? :G

I had never seen Great Blue Heron chicks! They are SO CUTE! Do they always nest in trees?

hi Linda, yes, GBH's always nest in trees. there are several "heronries" - groups of nests, usually 15-20 or more in a cluster of trees - in the area around where i live, but mostly the nests are too far away to give a decent view. this nest is one of two that's NOT in a heronry; there are just the two nests, about 15 feet apart in the same tree over a pond ina park in the middle of a Seattle suburb! you can drive up and park 25 yards from the tree, and walk right under the nests on a little pathway. i've been trying to catch a glimpse of these chicks, and these were the first shots i managed. just wish the light had been better! it's supposed to be sunny next weekend... maybe i'll go back there and try it again!

Wonderful shots. First I've seen a GBH chick. We have a nesting area near here, but way deep in a swampy area with no way to get close. Smart birds. Woody
