Does anyone know what typebird this is? Thesewere taken near dusk ina park about 30 miles north ofLos Angeles CA . The photos are very grainy, but hopefully enough detail is there toID him. Any help greatly appreciated. Is this some type of bluebird?

He is quite unafraid of people, and allowed me to get quite close. Photos taken with Canon EFS 17-85 at 85mm. I hope to catch him later with stronger light and a longer lens.

TT.

Well! It's our EASTERN male Bluebird! They can be tamed - especially if you have live mealworms! (yuk) Have fun and keep us posted!

Clearly this is a Male Eastern Bluebird. I refuse to acknowledge your California address, which would make the above wrong. Some might say that this is in fact a Western Bluebird. I pity them...:?

Thank you very much for the quick replies. I didn't realize the Eastern Bluebirdcould be found this far West! For some reason, I assumed it had to be something different due to the location!

Too bad Cardinals and Blue Jays don't make there way out here too. Having grown up in the Mid West, it really is something you miss.

Thanks..

Thomas.

Yes...:G

The two birds are quite similar, but on the Western the blue is a bit more intense, almost purple in some spots. I am basing this on location, not any visual attribute...

It is a western bluebird actually. Take a look at this link as there are pictures of all three types of bluebirds on the page Eastern Bluebird

The pictures on the link, at least to my old eyes, identify it as an Eastern Bluebird. Notice the white belly....the Western Bluebird doesn't have a white belly, according to the pictures.
