I tried a different approach. I converted the original to BW and then colorized it to sepia and then cropped and sharpened. Here is the result:

I've just (in the past few minutes) downloaded the trial version of ACDSee8. I tried it to modify the colors in this picture - and now I'm tempted to drive up to their place (only a few miles away!) and buy the full version.

and why not add some canvas, I don't usually but hey it seems the theme and it works with this image.
