Mr. Rubber.....No need to "figure it out!" Check out this tutorial! It's using Photoshop, but lots of other editors have the tools you need. Once you see what's involved, you can modify the process to suit your software. You might be in trouble if your editor doesn't support layers or layer masks. These features should almost be considered mandatory for an editor, IMO.
