I cropped the original and then resized it to 1024 x 768 using pixel resize in Paint ShopPro 9. Image was saved as JPEG using 8% compression to be able to upload it here.

Any help or advice with this image would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The backlighting on this one is what is keeping the detail on the bird from showing. I don't use PSP, but i believe it has similar capabilities to Photoimpact. There are a couple ways to get the detail in the shadows to come out. One would be to use the shadows and highlights sliders to raise the level of shadows until you could see the feathers well, then adjust contrast and saturation to get colors back.

I took a little different approach, and used the High Dynamic Range function to create a new picture, which I then copied and pasted over the original in luminosity only mode. Adjusted transparency to where it looked ok, then merged. This brought up the noise quite a bit, so I applied a little noise reduction and some sharpening to bring back the detail.

wow, great job! thank-you!

There are only about 200 of these birds left in FLorida and I really wanted to be able to see it after photographing it!

Thanks again :)

Like Brian, I used Shadow/Highlight, this time in Photoshop.

Also denoised the background and sharpened just the bird. Just showing it can be done with various software.

Great shot BTW.

As a mere beginner with paint shop pro I thought I would give your bird image a go as a learning experiment.
